It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like… Winter Weather!
With the holidays fast approaching, the stockings are being hung by the chimney with care and the chestnuts are starting to roast. All Iowans know that along with the festive holiday cheer comes the bitter cold and snowy conditions, which can be an easy pathway to weather-related accidents and unwanted insurance claims.
Here are a few tips to ensure you enjoy all the reindeer games you want this holiday season, without having to recover from an icy incident!
Maintain your vehicle: Cold weather makes car maintenance all the more essential. When you enter your car, give it a bit to warm up to avoid any potential engine combustion or brake accidents! These could lead to engine failure and vehicle malfunction… plus, you want some time for your window to defrost!
Layer up: When the temperature drops sub-zero, and the wind chill is equivalent to the North Pole, it is important to wear the right gear for the weather. Pack layers and leave blankets in your car, and make sure you wear the correct shoes with enough traction to avoid slipping and dropping any presents.
Monitor weather conditions: Before you commute anywhere during the holiday season, make sure you check what the weather will look like during your travels. If the snow is piling up, make sure to leave extra time for travel. Remember that Grandma’s fruitcake isn’t going anywhere, so don’t rush!
Warm up responsibly: Monitor the use of space heaters and do not leave them unattended for long periods of time. And make sure to leave them in an open space, as they can easily catch fire to any furniture or items closer than three feet!
December brings so much festive cheer, and it would be much better to enjoy the holiday festivities without worrying about an impending insurance claim from a holiday accident. Be sure to take these steps so Santa has a safe place to bring your gifts this year!
