Back-to-School Safety Tips for All

As the back-to-school season kicks off, it’s not just about school supplies and new schedules; it’s about keeping your family safe at every stage of life. Whether you’re waving goodbye to your little one at the bus stop, nervously handing over the car keys to your teenager, or helping your college student move into their dorm, the Iowa Insurance Institute has you covered with safety tips to ease your worries and minimize risk.

Kids are excited to get back to school, and that can lead to risky moments around busy streets. Here’s how to make sure they get to class safely.

  • Be Seen to Be Safe: Bright clothes, backpacks with reflectors, and teaching the “stop, look, and listen” strategy to your little ones go a long way.
  • Teach the 10-Foot Rule: Kids should stay at least 10 feet away from the front or back of the school bus to stay visible to drivers.
  • Eyes Up, Phones Down: Whether walking to the bus stop or school, kids should avoid distractions like phones or earbuds and stay alert.

Parent Tip: Remember, as drivers, we need to slow down in school zones, watch for kids darting between cars, and always stop for school buses loading or unloading!

Teens are excited about their newfound independence behind the wheel, but they’re also at a higher risk for crashes. Helping them develop safe driving habits can prevent crashes.

  • Eliminate Distractions: No texting, eating, or fooling around with the radio while driving. It’s a law! Iowa’s legislature passed a law prohibiting drivers from holding or manually operating any electronic device while driving. This law went into effect on July 1, 2025.
  • No Speeding: Speeding is a factor in nearly one-third of teen fatal crashes. Set clear expectations about speed limits.
  • Model Good Behavior: Teens mimic what they see – so drive how you want your teen to drive.

Parent Tip: Ask your insurance agent about good student discounts, driver safety programs, and graduated license rules in your area.

Sending your child to college is exciting, but dorm life comes with its own set of risks. Here’s how your student can stay safe while enjoying campus life.

  • Lock Up Everything: Laptops, tablets, and valuables should never be left unattended, even for “just a minute.” Always lock dorm rooms and vehicles.
  • Know the Emergency Plan: Students should know where the nearest exits are, participate in campus safety drills, and know who to call in case of emergencies.
  • Protect Your Identity: Shred sensitive papers, use strong passwords, and avoid oversharing personal information online.

Parent Tip: College students may need renter’s insurance for their belongings, so check your homeowner’s policy to see if coverage extends to campus.

By being proactive, you can help your family stay safe. Have a fun, safe, and successful school year!
